Twelve Oil Pastels To Start With
Staedtler 241 NC12 is a box of 12 assorted oil pastels, the entry set of the 241 range, with round crayons about 8 mm across for school art and first experiments with blending.
The twelve colours cover the basics: white, yellow, orange, salmon, carmine red, cyan, pale blue, willow green, sap green, rose wood, grey and black. That is enough to mix secondaries on the page, lighten with white and shade with grey or black.
Staedtler describe the crayons as brilliant, colour-intensive and waterproof, and especially break-resistant, which matters when a class of students presses hard. They are suitable for colouring and for the scraping technique, where layers of colour are covered with black and then scratched back.
Oil pastels also work on almost all smooth surfaces, according to Staedtler, so they are not limited to drawing paper. For more colours the same crayon comes in boxes of 16 and 25; for younger hands there is the thicker jumbo 243.
