Charcoal In Three Degrees With A Stump, Ten Cards At A Time
Each Staedtler 100C SBK4 card holds three Mars Lumograph charcoal pencils, one each in S (soft), M (medium) and H (hard), plus a paper stump for blending, and this listing supplies ten of those cards.
Staedtler describe a lead with a high charcoal content that lays down deep, velvety blacks with a textured matte finish. The three degrees give you a working range on one card: H for construction lines and light hatching, M for mid tones, S for the darkest shadows in a portrait or a stormy sky. The stump then softens and joins the tones into smooth gradients.
Because the charcoal sits in a wooden case, it stays cleaner in the hand than stick charcoal and sharpens to a point for detail. The lead is roughly 4.5 mm across, so use a sharpener with a large hole or sandpaper, as Staedtler suggest.
