Rich Darks Without Going All The Way
Staedtler tradition 110-5B packs 12 very soft pencils into one box, the grade just short of 6B for deep shadows and high-contrast drawing.
Next to a 4B, a 5B lays down noticeably blacker graphite with the same pressure. It is a strong choice for the darkest areas of a portrait, cast shadows in a still life, or bold, loose sketches where line weight matters more than fine detail. It also blends readily, so you can push tone around with a stump or tissue.
Staedtler describe the tradition as a high quality pencil for drawing and sketching and say it is break-resistant thanks to a special lead formulation and super-bonded lead. The gold STAEDTLER tradition 5B print runs along a red and black barrel, and Staedtler state the pencils are made in Germany.
Very soft leads wear down fast, so a box of 12 is practical for art classes and regular sketchers.
