4B Matte Black For Portrait Shading
Staedtler Mars Lumograph black 100B-4B, box of 12: the middle of the black range, soft enough for rich shading and firm enough to keep an edge.
4B sits between 2B and 6B in the six-grade Lumograph black line. It is a natural choice for faces, hair and fabric folds, where you want velvety darks without the glare that heavy graphite can give. Staedtler build the range on a high carbon lead with minimal light reflection for depth and dramatic contrast.
Per Staedtler, the lead lays down softly and blends, resists breaking in sharpening and use, and repeats each stroke evenly. 4B has an approx. 3.6 mm lead and is made in Germany, as Staedtler state. They pair it with the 511 001 tub sharpener or 510 25 double-hole sharpener and with the 526 50 and 5427 erasers.
