The pattern on the plate comes up through the paper as a texture. With six different optical designs in the pack, students can compare patterns side by side or combine them in one piece.

The supplier recommends drawing blocks, rubbing blocks or crayons, so the activity uses materials many art rooms already keep on hand. Students can move the paper and rub again over a different plate, building up several optical textures on one sheet, or swap plates with a partner to explore all six designs.

Pair the plates with blocks or crayons and a stack of drawing paper.
